Serfaus has a population of 1,100 and is situated on the “sun terrace” of the Oberes Gericht, the highest part of the Inn valley, which stretches from Landeck to the Reschenpass and is blessed with lots of natural charm.

About Serfaus

A pollen analysis carried out on the Komperdell delivered the result that pasture management was already being practiced here as early as 4,000 years ago.

A handful of pre-Roman field names remind us of the early settlers and traces of Celtic inhabitation are also to be found.

The region was conquered by the Romans in 15 BC. Ancient chronicles describe the Alpine inhabitants of this area as “Räter”. The “Räter” and the Romans intermingled over the course of the centuries and this lead to the creation of the Romansh people. The Romansh language, which is still spoken in Grisons, remains part of many village, hamlet and field names today. From the 6th century onwards, the German-speaking Bajuvarii began to settle here and from approximately 1350 onwards there were also isolated cases of people from the Valais canton settling here. By around 1200, the German language had gradually displaced Romansh.

For many decades now tourism, especially winter tourism, has shaped the village of Serfaus. With a capacity of 6,400 beds, Serfaus is the largest tourist village in the Oberes Gericht. Along with Ischgl, Sölden and St. Anton am Arlberg, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is now among the best-known tourism regions in Tyrol.

Due to the increasing amount of traffic in the village, in 1983 the village council approved a project for an “air cushion funicular underground railway”. In 1985, the Serfaus village underground went into operation.

Traffic calming

When the Serfaus Dorfbahn went into operation, a driving ban at the municipality of Serfaus has been issued. Guests are allowed to drive to the accommodation when arriving. During the stay it is prohibited to use the car within the village (e.g. for shopping, driving to the cable car station, …). Excursions outside the village are permitted. The driving ban is valid during winter and summer season. Supervision is carried out by the village police Serfaus.
